The Black Phone's Easter egg of horror classic The Tingler is explained by Scott Derrickson: 'I had the same experience Finney had... being shocked and disturbed by it, but also really excited by it and just had an extraordinary experience watching it.'

The Black Phone's Easter egg to 1959 horror classic The Tingler is explained by director Scott Derrickson, saying it influenced the film's tone. The Black Phone was released on June 24 and has been a hit with critics and audiences, scoring a bevy of positive reviews and grossing over $150 million at the box office. Derrickson's other films include The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Doctor Strange.

The Black Phone follows Finley , a young boy who is abducted by serial killer The Grabber and must escape with the help of the callers from the titular black phone. At one point in the film, The Tingler is shown on a TV screen, starring Vincent Price as he deals with a parasite that feeds on fear. The Black Phone and The Tingler don't have much in common thematically, except perhaps an antagonist that thrives on inflicting fear, and some supernatural elements.

"I had the same experience Finney had in that movie. I was younger -- I think I was five or six -- and I was downstairs either early in the morning or late at night. The TV was on, and that came on, and I was watching it; I had never seen a horror film. It was in black-and-white, and when that scene happened for the first time when the blood was red, I just remember being shocked and disturbed by it but also really excited by it and just had an extraordinary experience watching it.

It's likely The Tingler has inspired all of Derrickson's films in one way or another, the way all directors have films that have shaped how they envision their own projects. According to Derrickson, other influences for The Black Phone include Rosemary's Baby, The Devil's Backbone, and London After Midnight with The Grabber receiving comparisons to the latter's protagonist played by Lou Chaney.

It's always interesting to hear where directors get their influences from, to see how ideas evolve and change over time from generation to generation. Though The Tingler might not be the first movie that comes to mind when thinking of The Black Phone, Derrickson's sure hand behind the camera brings across the effectiveness of the fear he felt as a child while watching that film.
