The Ottawa Senators recouped significant assets under tough circumstances and the Tampa Bay Lightning celebrated as top talent migrated westward during the 2019 NHL trade deadline.
In the midst of a strong season under new coach Bill Peters, the Flames start the post-deadline run to the playoffs in first place in the Western Conference. But while all their conference rivals made significant deadline upgrades, the Flames weren’t able to get in on the action; their only deal was bringing in depth defensemen Oscar Fantenberg from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2020 conditional fourth-round pick.
With right-shot defensemen also at a premium, Gorton extracted two late-round draft picks and minor-league defenseman Julius Bergman in exchange for 32-year-old Adam McQuaid, as well as two conditional picks that both could turn into first-rounders from Dallas for Mats Zuccarello. but for the second year in a row, the Rangers are now set to make 10 picks in the upcoming draft.
The Pens are no strangers to patching holes in their blue line for the playoffs, and assistant coach Sergei Gonchar has a reputation for being able to get the most out of defensemen who have underperformed in other markets: think Justin Schultz, Ian Cole, Trevor Daley and Ron Hainsey during their Stanley Cup years.
Why mess with what they have? With 98 points in 62 games, the 2018-19 Lightning are poised to go down in history as one of the. They're also deep in playoff experience after several near misses over the last few years.
