Matt Reeves has discussed a potential TheBatman spinoff show at HBO Max featuring Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman.
Warner Bros. and HBO are looking to expand The Batman franchise with spin-off shows, and one of them might be centered on Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman. After COVID-19 delays, The Batman is finally set to open in theaters on March 4, 2022, and Warner Bros. is hoping to kick off an entirely new Batman film franchise with the Robert Pattinson-led film.
In July 2020, it was announced that The Batman director Matt Reeves was developing a television series based around the Gotham City police department, likely titled Gotham PD, that would take place a year before the events of The Batman. Then in September 2021, it was reported that a spin-off series based around Colin Farrell's Penguin from The Batman was in the works at HBO Max and would show the Penguin's rise to power. Warner Bros.
"I've talked to the HBO Max folks. What we're really trying to do is to launch this world. If the world embraces this, we have a lot of ideas for things we want to do, and for sure we want Selena to continue...We're talking about a lot of things, but all of it depends on...we're about to release this movie, and it comes down to how people receive it."
Catwoman was introduced in Batman #1 in 1940 by creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger and next to the Joker is Batman's most iconic and recognizable antagonist, as well as his most central love interest. The character has appeared in numerous Batman adaptations from animation, live-action television like the 1960's Adam West Batman series and Gotham.
The character of Catwoman has a long rich history of comic book storylines that a potential HBO Max series could explore, from Jeph Loeb's When In Rome to Darwyn Cooke's Catwoman run. Darwyn Cooke's Batman: Ego is set to be an influence on The Batman so Reeves is likely familiar with the writer's work.
