The worst thing about drugs in sports isn’t the cheating. It’s the grubbiness required to explain away the drugs

The first major of the year is tennis’s first chance to publicly wrangle with its new reputation as a pharmacological paradise. Since the end of last season, two No. 1s – Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek – have been in the news for doping violations. They’re both playing in Australia.Taken in isolation, these stories sound reasonable. Taken in aggregate – since it’s the excuse used by every athlete in every sport who’s been caught with his or her hand in the pill bottle – they turn a little fishy.
Unfortunately, Djokovic no longer wants to talk about it. He dipped out of a press conference when reporters asked for specifics. We reached an understanding – she would pretend not to know, and I would pretend not to do it. No more lies required. Everyone’s dignity was preserved. No high-level discussion or changes to policy required. Just an unspoken understanding about what is easiest and best.
