At sxsw, TheAngryBlackGirlAndHerMonster stars layahayes, Chad L. Coleman & Denzel Whitaker joined filmmaker Bomani J. Story to share how their take on Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein story tackles grief and confronts the stereotype in its title:
The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster premiered at the South By Southwest film festival earlier this month, but not before being acquired by RLJE Films. Already a success story for the indie circuit, writer-director Bomani J. Story's feature film debut is a touching and twisted take on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The movie follows the brilliant Vicaria, who has been dealt a terrible hand in life despite her many gifts.
And that just added on after meeting Bomani, and having meetings and conversations with him. In a lot of ways, working on this movie with this team opened my mind to more ideas and more ways to play, and I feel more liberated every time that I come onto a set. I feel like I learned a lot from playing a character like Vicaria. Even watching it last night, there's so many things that people can take from seeing a character like that on screen. So, it is exciting.
There's a lot of different ways people deal, so to me, it was about really getting into the humanity of all the characters. Because I feel like the other element that gets lost amongst some of these translations is that it just becomes about the monster itself. The story is called Frankenstein, and Frankenstein isn't the monster.
Kango is a character that might be seen as an antagonist by Vicaria and the audience, but everyone has their own story. What is his story in your eyes, Denzel? How did he get to his circumstances at the start of the film? We've seen different examples of that, especially cats who've outgrown the rap game or the crack game, and now they're moguls and CEOs. That's the type of mind that Kango has. It's just unfortunate, because he does have to use intimidation. He has to use certain tactics just to command the respect within his community.
