In 1974, a cocky marathoner entered the Western States 100 horse race without a horse.

In 1973, Gordy was without a horse, but he wasn’t done with the race: Drucilla Barner, the Western States Trail Foundation secretary and the first woman to win the Tevis Cup, asked Gordy if he wanted to run the course. Gordy, then a juvenile counselors in Meadow Vista, California, was intrigued. “I have this rational component that intervenes when things make sense,” he says with a laugh.

The night before the race, Gordy climbed into his friend Diane Ripley’s horse trailer parked near the start . He shoveled out just enough manure to lay down his sleeping bag inside. The aroma was familiar—he’d slept in the hayloft of a barn during his senior year of college at the University of California, Santa Barbara after he got tired of his apartment. “I got to like the smell of reprocessed alfalfa,” he says.He lay in the darkness, feeling anxious, lonely, and a little bitter.
