At his best, Calgary Flames forward prospect Matthew Coronato is relentless, tenacious, a guy who works his tail off.“When Matthew is going, he is on the puck and he is creating loose pucks and turning pucks over, in the sense that he is on defencemen and they’re turning pucks over and then he is able to get the benefit of the offence created from those turnovers,” said Flames director of player development Ray Edwards of the emerging right-winger.
Mangiapane is a lock. The 20-year-old Coronato, meanwhile, is determined to prove that he is ready for primetime, a mission that starts with a hat-trick of auditions at the 2023 Young Stars Classic in Penticton, B.C. Coronato, who was a first-round selection in the 2021 NHL Draft and turned pro in the spring after a pair of seasons with the NCAA’s Harvard Crimson, is among the top candidates.
But as the Flames’ hopefuls headed to the annual prospect tournament in B.C.’s Okanagan Valley, he was doing his darnedest to forget the big picture and disregard any roster projections, flattering as they might be.
