Wed/Thurs-to-holiday-weekend legs on par with the other Disney Thanksgiving openers will still put it closer to $45 million than $35 million for the five-day opening.
. The good news is that the quite good Stephanie Beatriz-starring toon dropped just 22.6% from Wednesday, which is a better hold than all of those.in 2012, which earned $32 million from a $8.6 million two-day total. Ifplays likewise from a $13.3 million Wed/Thurs cume, it’ll flirt with a $50 million Wed-Sun debut. Even Wed/Thurs-to-holiday-weekend legs on par with the other Disney toons will still put it closer to $45 million than $35 million.
Oh, and here’s some irresponsible speculative math, just for fun. You know what other kid-friendly toon opened soft on a Wednesday and then dropped just 22% on Thursday?, that’s who. The DWA toon opened in mid-May 2004 and earned a slightly underwhelming $21 million Wed/Thurs total. It then earned $28 million on Friday , a single-day record $44 million on Saturday and a $108 million Fri-Sun/$128 million Wed-Sun debut.
The “nobody noticed or cared that it opened on Wednesday” blockbuster has provided 17 years of false hope for underwhelming Wednesday openers. It’s one of those fluke events that almost never happens, but if it were to happen again here thenwould be looking at an $18 million Friday gross, $28 million on Saturday and $22 million on Sunday for a $68 million Fri-Sun/$81 million Wed-Sun debut. No, most Wed-Sun openers don’t pull 11 times their respective Wednesday grosses.
The very small Thursday drop does suggest that word-of-mouth will help and that maybe family audiences are checking it out at their convenience over the Fri-Sun weekend. Covid curves notwithstanding, we’ve seen films likepull “business as usual” opening weekends all year long. And we’ve seen at least some family films opening with comparatively “as expected” debuts sinceonly ends up with 50% of what’s expected for a Disney toon over this weekend, that’s not just a Covid problem.
