At St. Joseph’s in Oak Cliff, residents shouted, gasped and cried quietly during the eclipse.

She had seen daylight slip into a surreal night before in 1955 as an 18-year-old university student in the Philippines. Now, 68 years, 8,300 miles and a lifetime of joys and sorrows later, she watched it happen again from the courtyard of St. Joseph’s Residence in north Oak Cliff. The 86-year-old never imagined she’d live long enough to see another total solar eclipse, and a year ago she never imagined she’d feel close to God again.

Around her in a fleet of walkers and wheelchairs sat about two dozen other residents of the assisted living home, gasping as they held their protective glasses to their eyes and craned their necks to take in the haloed moon.“I only see one banana. Why is Mary seeing two bananas?” said another.Birds circled overhead, and Boado remembered the birds from the last time she saw the sun disappear. Roosters, to be exact. They crowed and crowed until the sun returned.
