Anytime a Canadian Premier League team is matched against a team from higher-tier Major League Soccer, the odds are stacked against the CPL club. But PFC has already shown that it is a team that could push TFC to the limit on Wednesday, having defeated another MLS club, the Vancouver Whitecaps, in preliminary Canadian Championship action.
The CC champion wins the Voyageurs Cup and a trip to the 2022 Concacaf Champions League tournament. The winner of Wednesday’s semi faces CF Montreal in the final. TFC has one regular-season MLS match remaining, this Sunday against D.C. United at BMO Field. And, though the Reds have been officially eliminated from the MLS Cup playoffs for weeks, TFC has played well of late, posting draws in its last three games against clubs fighting to remain in the MLS playoff picture.
“We can’t let the occasion get to us,” PFC captain Jamar Dixon said. “It’s a different environment, but it’s still two goals, it’s still a normal size pitch. If we just focus on our normal style of play and things start to go our way, I think we can do well in this match.”“It’s a very interesting team. It’s a team that plays 4-3-3. They like to be aggressive and we expect it’s a team that’s going to be faithful to their style,” Perez said.
