Ayo Akinola’s knee injury felt like a kick in the teeth to Toronto FC interim head coach Javier Perez.

“It’s obviously very bad news for us,” said Perez. “And we’ll have to adjust the roster in order to fill the void.”

TFC also has a couple of other veteran forwards ready to pick up the slack in Akinola’s absence, including Patrick Mullins and Dom Dwyer, as the club fights to get back into the MLS playoff picture. The Reds sit second from last in the MLS Eastern Conference with nine points through 13 matches, though under Perez they are unbeaten in their last two matches, including the 1-1 draw against Orlando — the first game at BMO Field since last Sept.1.

“They’re a great side,” added Dwyer. “They’re very organized, they’re a quick side. But we’re playing at home and we want to make this place a fortress that it’s been for many years. That starts and we want three points and we’ll keep building from there.”Article content The Reds definitely seemed to have an extra jump in their step on Saturday. There seems to be a new sense of optimism growing, though Dwyer said the players never wavered in their commitment to win during the hard times.Article content
