Renaming Cornwallis Street in Nora Bernard's name | SaltWireST. JOHN'S, N.L. — NL Health Services is piloting a program at select health-care centres aimed at making it easier for patients to use text messaging to book and schedule appointments.

Through a partnership with strategic leadership and community investment company Seafair Capital and local text messaging platform TxtSquad, the service is a platform for conversational text messaging to confirm, schedule, and inquire about health appointments by texting clerical staff at participating clinics.

These clinics include the primary health clinic in Holyrood, family care teams in St. John’s east and west, the Bay St. George family care team, and the respiratory clinic at 50 Mundy Pond Rd. in St. John’s.Other goals of the system include reducing missed appointments, making the scheduling faster and enhancing clinic accessibility.

“The intended outcome is streamlined health-care communication between patients and clinics,” said Michelle Alexander, senior director of Primary Health Care and Community Services for Eastern-Rural Zone. “This will free up phone lines for those who prefer to schedule appointments by telephone, and, during the pilot project, patients can continue to call the clinics for appointments.”
