In September 2022, Brian was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Throughout the course of this basketball season, he went to chemotherapy then straight to practice and games
FORT WORTH, Texas — The game of basketball is hard enough when your mind is clear. But imagine performing at the highest level when it’s clouded with the possibility of death. That’s what Brian Wanamaker endured this season and that’s why he’s one of the strongest people you’ll ever meet.
During that timespan, he was at a crossroads for what to do next. The lawsuit over his eligibility was unsuccessful so he found himself working retail back in the states. “At that moment, I knew I wanted to coach,” he said. “I wanted to be like [Rasool]. I never told him that. But I wanted to be like him to help all the young men he helped. I want to help players grow and understand how to be disciplined, respectful and work with people. I feel like my purpose has always been to impact people’s lives.”“There was one day I was walking into practice and I was like, ‘Coach, my back is really hurting today. I gotta go to the doctor right now,’” he said.
“It just hit my heart because I feel like he was just starting his life: a young father, marriage, all these things that he should be embracing but now he has another weight to bear,” said TWU head coach Brennen Shingleton.
