Texas will expand voluntary lead testing in schools and daycare centers.
The program is part of a nationwide effort to improve drinking water infrastructure, particularly in disadvantaged and underserved communities. Exposure in children can cause slowed growth, impaired hearing, behavior and learning problems and lower IQs. Young children are particularly vulnerable to the health effects of lead on the brain and nervous system, according to the EPA.
Schools and childcare programs in low income or underserved areas, such as schools where at least 50% of children receive free and reduced lunches or those who have Head Start programs.Older facilities that are more likely to have pipes and fixtures containing lead.
