The public community college is now authorized by the state to operate in Comal and Guadalupe counties.

Texas State Technical College officials say they are considering the possibility of expanding their programs in Comal and Guadalupe counties. The school's Waco campus is shown in this file photo.Texas State Technical College, a public community college with 10 campuses around the state, could open a location in Comal or Guadalupe county thanks to authorization from a new state law.

Local leaders initiated the effort to get Comal and Guadalupe counties added to the school's authorized locations, said Jonathan Hoekstra, Texas State Technical College's executive vice chancellor."The employers in our area, they just fundamentally need opportunities to train their employees," said New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce president Jonathan Packer. That sentiment was backed up by data from Texas State Technical College's chief economist, he said.

Getting authorization for a campus was the next step to potentially expanding offerings in the area, Hoekstra said. The college has heard from local employers about training needs for years, he said, but the school had no way to respond until it received legislative approval. The school isn't ready to make any firm plans yet. Hoekstra said the next steps will include learning more from labor market data and relationships with the community to find out what gaps the college could fill with its training programs.
