Rice University President Reginald DesRoches and Texas Southern University President Lesia Crumpton-Young sign an agreement marking an official partnership between their institutions.Texas Southern University launched an official partnership on Tuesday with Rice University, becoming the latest HBCU to build ties to a member institution of the prestigious Association of American Universities.
“I knew this was the right university for Texas Southern to affiliate with,” TSU President Lesia Crumpton-Young said. “We knew that we would forge a national model that would transform lives, that would advance our institutions and that will become a national model … others will envy.” Faculty at Rice have previously contributed to TSU and University of Houston’s “Texas Trends Survey,” a five-year project which charts changing public opinion across the state. TSU is also involved in a Rice project aimed at producing more doctoral students of color in science, technology, engineering and math fields, university officials said.
Dittmar said she could see TSU’s law school collaborating with Rice’s public policy and social sciences researchers, or TSU’s pharmacists working with Rice’s bioengineers and chemists. Rice’s architecture school and Kinder Institute for Public Policy could also find natural collaborations with TSU’s program for urban planning and environmental policy, she said.
