Texas should be more aggressive in offering booster shots for COVID-19 | Editorial
Immunizations Supervisor and registered nurse Barbara Davis administers a Pfizer COVID-19 booster shot to Jonah Taylor, 16, at the Dallas County Health and Human Services building on Dec. 13.The omicron variant keeps surging at an eye-popping rate, but the number of Texans getting a booster shot hasn’t surged with it.In Texas, 61% of eligible Texans have received the initial two- or one-dose vaccines, but only about a fifth of Texans age 16 and older are boosted.
There is a significant gulf between the number of Texans who were willing to get the first set of doses and those who’ve been boosted. As people in this state waver or delay the date to get the booster, the seemingly milder but highly contagious omicron variant will continue to upend our lives. It’s already shutting down some schools, exacerbating staffing shortages and filling COVID-19 wards.
