Texas running back Keilan Robinson celebrates his touchdown after he blocked a Louisiana-Monroe punt during the first half an NCAA college football game Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, in Austin, Texas. AUSTIN — In time, Texas might need quarterback Quinn Ewers to really sling it. Coach Steve Sarkisian brought the Ohio State transfer here to do just that, to use his famed arm for heroic football deeds and heal a program that’s been sputtering for about a decade now.
But Week 1 also served as a proving ground for several other players who are going to determine whether Texas can insert itself into the Big 12 championship picture. Those three underclassmen, along with third-year center Jake Majors and fifth-year right tackle Christian Jones, helped clear the way for junior running back Bijan Robinson and the rest of Texas’ hyper-talented running backs.
On the other side, defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s group put together a strong debut on the heels of a miserable 2021 campaign.
