after many were shocked by returns in 2020 that saw large swaths of the once reliably blue border counties voting for former president Donald Trump.
Political scientist Mark P. Jones with Rice University noted that South Texas Democrats might be finding that the national Democratic Party no longer resonates with them. Abbott campaign strategist Dave Carney name-checked some of those same issues during a press call Wednesday. In North Texas, the number of votes cast in the GOP primary was up 21% to about 364,000 voters. Participation in the Democratic primary was up 1.5% to 263,000.
