Despite Gray’s hesitancy towards a bullpen role, the Rangers could use him in one once the rotation gets back to full strength.
Texas Rangers relief pitcher Jon Gray works in the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, April 20, 2024, in Atlanta.turned Gray’s normal between-starts bullpen session into a high-leverage relief outing, manager Bruce Bochy reaffirmed it was simply a one-off outing born out of necessity and opportunity. At least for now. Gray, who last started Tuesday at Detroit, will start Wednesday against Seattle.
“It’s not really what I want to do,” Gray said of relief work. “But if it turns out to be the best thing for us, it’s something I wouldn’t really mind. We are going to get some pretty good guys back. If it turns out to be the case, yeah, it could be fun. It definitely felt a little simpler than it did last year.”, the Rangers decided to forego a traditional between-starts bullpen for Gray and asked him to be ready to pitch in relief instead.
