“How do we protect the rights of employers to safely regulate but also protect citizens? It would be a policy of this state, if this bill passes that, you cannot fire someone, alienate them, or choose to discriminate against them if they choose not to get the vaccine,” said Rep. Leach.Critics like Rep. Anchía think SB 7 may have harmful repercussions on private companies. He expressed those concerns during Monday’s meeting, pointing to the fluidity of the Coronavirus.
The proposed legislation would fine private companies $10,000 dollars per violation for enforcing the COVID-19 vaccine or ending someone’s employment who refuses it. Employees would be allowed to file complaints against the company. All claims would be investigated by the Texas Workforce Commission. Rep. Leach believes the safe harbor lies within companies having the ability to enforce reasonable work policies, as long as the policies do not have an adverse action.
