Two people were killed and a third person injured during a shooting at Texas A&M University's campus in Commerce on Monday.At a press conference, university Police Chief Bryan Vaughn said the shooting occurred inside a room in a freshman residence hall and confirmed that the two people who were killed were adult women. A small child, about 2 years old, was injured. The child is in stable condition, according to Vaughn.
Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day, and students, faculty and staff were told to shelter in place. As of 2:38 p.m. EST, the shelter in place recommendation was lifted, according to the university's website. However, the residence hall and surrounding areas were blocked off because of the ongoing investigation. Displaced students were told to go to the Rayburn Student Center, where counselors were available to help students cope with the situation.
Located more than 200 miles from the university's main campus in College Station, the Commerce campus has about 8,230 undergraduates, according to the College Board. Senator Ted Cruz posted on Twitter that he and his wife, Heidi, were"praying for the continued safety and security" of everyone on campus.
