Four-star quarterback Marcel Reed of Nashville, Tenn., backed off his verbal commitment to the Rebels on Monday and then announced he intends to attend A&M.
Reed is the lone quarterback among the Aggies’ 15 pledges to date, with the early signing period starting Wednesday. Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin is 2-0 against A&M’s Jimbo Fisher in the last two years, but Monday’s Reed reversal marks an off-field win for the Aggies’ embattled boss. In addition, three-star linebacker Taurean York of Temple High also pledged to A&M on Monday night. A&M finished 5-7 this season and failed to reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008, while Mississippi faces Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl in NRG Stadium on the night of Dec. 28.
Five-star 2022 quarterback Conner Weigman of Bridgeland is expected to start in 2023 for the Aggies as he did over the second half of 2022, while LSU transfer Max Johnson is still part of the program as of mid-December. Former starter Haynes King intends to transfer to Georgia Tech. The Aggies currently have 23 scholarship players in the NCAA transfer portal and another three who have chosen to bypass their senior seasons for the NFL draft, so they have plenty of room on their roster for a full class of 25 to 30 players, both through high school signees and transfers.
