Texas A&M safety Demani Richardson raced 82 yards for a score Saturday after taking the ball from Tyreek Chappell, who recovered Arkansas QB K.J. Jefferson’s fumble near the goal line.COLLEGE STATION — A bright idea among the bedlam and one long cultivated in back yards across the country helped save Texas A&M’s season.
“Well,” Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said in summing up the sentiments of Razorbacks everywhere, “that was a tough one.” “You fight hard, and stuff just happens in a football game,” Richardson said of the joy of unscripted drama in sports. “That’s why I love college football, and being a part of it.” “I said, ‘Give me the ball! Give me the ball!’” Richardson recalled with a chuckle. “And if he didn’t, I was going to take it anyways.”
Richardson raced another 82 yards along the left sideline for the touchdown. A&M missed the extra point but was still thrilled to head to the locker room at halftime down 14-13 after trailing 14-0 10 minutes into the game. “I’m like, this dude here is crazy,” A&M defensive back Antonio Johnson said of Richardson. “I love him — he’s a ballplayer. I don’t think I would have thought about doing that. We’re going to remember that moment as a team for years to come.”His 42-yard field goal attempt with the Razorbacks trailing by two and 90 seconds left in the game hit the top of the right upright and bounced back into the end zone.
