Texans wide receiver John Metchie III didn’t see it coming.
He didn’t know that his teammates had a surprise for him last week. So when he walked out of the tunnel onto the empty field at NRG Stadium and saw his fellow wide receivers standing with orange and navy blue cleats in their hands, he smiled a wide smile. On one side of the cleats, the word “Believe” is written. On the other side: “Metchie Strong,” with a portrait of him doing a touchdown celebration.
Each year, the NFL designates a week to allow players to wear customized cleats to reveal their passions and pick a cause that is important to them. They call it"My Cause, My Cleats." Some players chose cancer research; others chose organizations that have influenced them. The Texans' wide receivers room will wear cleats Sunday to represent their teammate, Metchie, who this year was diagnosed with a form of leukemia.
“It meant a lot, the support of my teammates, knowing that they’re keeping me in their thoughts and doing something like this, honoring me in a sense. It’s love,” Metchie said in a statement provided by the Texans. “It’s the type of love that gives you the strength to keep going and keep swimming.”
