Texans quarterback Davis Mills struggled this preseason without some of Houston’s top offensive weapons.The preseason is over, and here comes the most difficult part for Texans coach Lovie Smith.The Texans have to get their roster from 80 players to 53 before Tuesday’s deadline — a procedure Smith is all too familiar with in his more than 10 years as a head football coach. There are 16 players who will make the practice squad and one international player — Ogbonnia Okoronkwo — on the roster.
Adding depth or a proven pass-catching tight end would help the Texans, who didn’t get much from their current tight ends in the passing game in 2021. Second-year tight end Brevin Jordan and veteran Pharaoh Brown, who are locks to make the roster, combined for 43 catches for 349 yards and three touchdowns last season.
“Dameon Pierce has played good ball pretty much since he got in the facility,” Smith said. “He’s a good football player, right amount of power. He’ll make you miss in the open field. He can catch the ball. He can do a lot of things that NFL running backs do.”
