Terence Corcoran: Welcome to Canada’s new two solitudes, a nation divided over carbon and climate fpcomment
Two Solitudes: That’s how Hugh McLennan’s 1945 novel portrayed Canada — a nation of clashing English and French Canadians living in the same country under different languages, worldviews, experiences. In other words, a nation divided.
The Modern Miracle Network, by the way, is an organization of Alberta energy industry executives who promote the “miracle of hydrocarbons” and issue press releases that state “Life is Better with Canadian Hydrocarbons!” — which clearly riles Environment Minister Catherine McKenna.
More intriguing, the prime minister’s official itinerary for the April 24th nature summit included the following: 1:00 p.m. The Prime Minister will meet with Chief Executive Officer of Conservation International M. Sanjayan, and Vice Chair of the Conservation International Board of Directors, Harrison Ford. Note for media: Photo opportunity at the beginning of the meeting.
Most intriguing of these private sessions is the time spent with Charles Brindamour, the CEO of Intact Financial Corp., the largest provider of property and casualty insurance in Canada. Intact is a prime funder of Waterloo University’s Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation. The centre, headed by Blair Feltmate, is the insurance industry’s leading front organization for the dissemination of alarmist claims that climate change has radically transformed Canada’s weather.
