As Trump spoke Tuesday night, riding the economy and praising his own presidency in a broad appeal to voters, the Democrats were in the midst of a losing game

When Nancy Pelosi, America’s Impeacher in Chief, ripped up a document after President Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, she obviously wanted to be seen drawing and quartering a copy of the presidential text, the next best thing to doing the same to the president himself. While Pelosi’s intent was a symbolic outright rejection of everything Trump said and represents, her apparent act of defiance could also be interpreted as an unintended admission of defeat.

How could that be possible? Trump’s approval rating has risen to the highest level of his presidency, despite three years of mass-media vilification, months of Congressional impeachment proceedings against a president routinely labelled a criminal and a dictator, and two weeks of prime-time streaming debate from the Senate. The story is the sudden rise of Pete Buttigieg, a young gay former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who appears as a bit of a moderate compared with leftist radicals such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The latest Iowa caucus results posted Wednesday have Buttigieg holding a narrow lead over Sanders .
