PSAC reaches tentative deal with Treasury Board, ending strike for 120,000 federal workers across Canada

The Public Service Alliance of Canada and the federal government announced early Monday that new tentative agreements have been reached with the Treasury Board, bringing an end to the strike affecting 120,000 of its members across the country.

The union said an additional fourth year was added to the original proposal. The deal also includes a pensionable lump sum payment of $2,500, and “addresses PSAC members’ key priorities on remote work, contracting out and seniority.”“PSAC members held the line together and secured a fair contract that keeps up with the cost of living, increased protections around remote work, and creates safer, more inclusive workplaces,” said PSAC National President Chris Aylward in a statement.

The government statement confirms the one-time payment of $2,500. It also said it reached an agreement on working from home that is outside of the collective agreement. Canada Revenue Agency workers have also been at the bargaining table. The Union of Taxation Employees, an arm of PSAC, had been demanding a cumulative wage increase of 22.5 per cent over three years – the government had offered them 9 per cent.

For Ottawa, renewing new collective agreements with public sector workers is often a complex and arduous process simply because of the scale of the federal public service, the variety of jobs within it, and the fiscal position of the government in any given year.
