Indiana State Police said Edward Chekhun was driving south on I-65 when he crashed into the back of a semi.

A Tennessee man was killed in a fiery crash Saturday afternoon between a car and a semi on I-65 in downtown Indianapolis.

Eduard Chekhun was driving south at a high speed when he crashed into the back of the semi tractor-trailer, Indiana State Police said late Saturday night. The semi was stopped because of traffic congestion. The car, a black 2015 BMW, immediately caught fire. Police said bystanders tried to help Chekhun, but the fire was too intense. Chekhun, 28, from Sevierville, Tennessee, was pronounced dead shortly after.The crash happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. near the Meridian Street exit and shut down traffic for about three hours.

Investigators requested blood tests to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor. No one else was injured.
