Shouldice is an emergency physician at Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, one of the hospitals patients from Carleton Place have been advised to head to during the temporary emergency department closures there. On Monday, Queensway Carleton described wait times as longer than usual. Ottawa hospitals, notably the General campus of The Ottawa Hospital, have had some of the longest emergency department wait times in the province in recent months.
Among other things, CAEP is calling for a hospital bed capacity strategy “that reflects actual need.” Canada has one of the lowest rates of beds per capita among OECD countries. The residents of Carleton Place, a town of 10,000 people along busy Highway 7, deserve to have stable access to an emergency department, he said, noting, for instance, that three people recently died in a head-on crash just west of Carleton Place.
