For weeks now, the heat in India has been unrelenting. It's the third year in a row that the country has experienced severe heat waves — and it wasn't unexpected. An elderly man, who medical officials said was suffering from heat exhaustion, was helped into a hospital for treatment during a heat wave in Ahmedabad, India, on May 24. The country has been dealing with a heat wave for more than a week. A new record was set in Delhi on Wednesday, with the temperature reaching a stifling 52.
India declares a heat wave when the maximum temperature is 4.5 C to 6.4 C higher than normal. A severe heat wave is declared when it is at least 6.5 C higher than usual. The report says in that period, 6.3 billion people — roughly 78 per cent of the population — experienced at least 31 days of extreme heat that "was made at least two times more likely due to human-caused climate change."
Daytime temperatures pose a threat to people, Pershing said, but so do abnormally high nighttime temperatures.
