Forecasters predict today will be 'hot and mostly dry and sunny with highs reaching 26C to 31C'

It comes after the hottest August day in Ireland since records began occurred yesterday when temperatures of 31.7C were recorded at Oak Park in Carlow.But it will be"locally higher in parts of Leinster and Munster".Sea breezes will keep temperatures slightly lower near Ireland's coasts.

A Status Yellow high temperature warning remains in place across the country today until 6am on Monday. Acting Chief Medical Officer Professor Breda Smyth last week warned that those who are vulnerable to the effects of heat need to be extra careful during hot spells."Signs of heat exhaustion include headache, dizziness and confusion, loss of appetite and feeling sick, fast breathing or pulse, high temperature of 38C or above and being very thirsty," she said.

Prof Smyth advised:"Regularly and liberally apply sunscreen that has a sun protection factor of at least 30+ for adults and 50+ for children. "Stay out of direct sunlight for prolonged periods as much as possible during the day, especially between the hours of 11am to 3pm when UV is strongest."
