Shalan Joudry of Bear River First Nation is a Mi'kmaw poet, writer, storyteller and also the editor of"The Art of Mi'kmaq Basketry." She was approached initially by Formac Publishing to write the book herself due to her experience translating oral stories to written format. Joudry says initially, she didn't think she was the right person for an art book.
"These are all active basket makers actively passing on the tradition of basket making," she said."As though they're sitting beside you working, telling their life story or the teaching that they want to share with people. I feel like I was passing along the talking stick." "There's too many, which is a beautiful conundrum, but we were picking just a certain amount. This book isn't talking about the only master basket makers. These are some of our master basket makers spread through the territory," she said."Malglit and Virick were two of the first names put on that list. They're both very well known."'It takes a lifetime'
Joudry says the art form is often diminished as being simple or easy to do. However, she says the truth is generations of craftsmanship, creativity, and knowledge go into every piece.
