Updated: Tehran plane crash kills 63 Canadians soon after missiles hit U.S. bases — Iran won't hand over black boxes
A Boeing Co. 737-800 jetliner bound for Ukraine that crashed after takeoff in Iran, killing everyone on board including 63 Canadians, was most likely brought down by an engine fire, according to Tehran authorities.
Other authorities, however, didn’t follow Iran in pointing to a fire or technical issue. The Ukrainian embassy in Tehran amended an earlier statement in which it had ruled out terrorism, instead making no comment on possible causes. International rules for air-crash probes mean the countries that made the plane and its engines usually participate, providing technical expertise. But the current turmoil between Iran and the U.S. may complicate the involvement of the National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing.A pair of university lecturers and two students were among the 63 Canadian victims of the crash, according to a Iranian news agency and documents posted to social media.
“Our government will continue to work closely with its international partners to ensure that this crash is thoroughly investigated, and that Canadians’ questions are answered,” Trudeau said in a statement. An Iranian state-run outlet cited an official from the Iran Civil Aviation Organization as saying the pilots didn’t declare an emergency ahead of the crash, while an amateur video purportedly of the stricken plane showed a bright image descending steeply before hitting the ground.
Reuters reported that Ukraine will send experts to Iran later on Wednesday to investigate the crash. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Facebook after meeting government officials: “Our priority is to establish the truth and those responsible for this terrible catastrophe.”
