Kaylee Hunter , a prodigious 17-year-old striker from Calgary, is poised to make a significant impact in Canadian soccer. Having already tasted the international stage at the U-20 level and garnered recognition as the Most Promising Female Player for the Vancouver Whitecaps, Hunter is now embarking on a professional journey with AFC Toronto in the inaugural Northern Super League . Hunter's meteoric rise began at a tender age.
Introduced to soccer at three, she rapidly ascended through the ranks, eventually making her debut for the Canadian under-17 team in August 2023. Her exceptional talent caught the attention of scouts, leading to her move to Vancouver in January 2024 where she played a pivotal role in the Whitecaps Girls Elite team's successes, including winning League1 B.C. and the League1 Inter-Provincial Championship, which qualified them for the CONCACAF W Champions Cup.Hunter's journey has been marked by notable experiences. She participated in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, facing off against renowned players like Christine Sinclair and the Portland Thorns at B.C. Place Stadium, a dream come true for the young athlete. 'That was a dream come true for me,' Hunter said. 'I've always looked up to her since I was a little girl. So many people in Canada looked up to her. So getting to play alongside my idol, the GOAT of the game, (that's) something most people do not get to do. So I'm really fortunate to have that experience.' Hunter's prowess on the field has attracted the attention of AFC Toronto sporting director Billy Wilson, who sees her as a valuable asset to the club. 'We believe Kaylee is undoubtedly one of the best emerging players in the country and we are ecstatic that she has decided to take the first steps of her professional career with AFC Toronto,' Wilson said.Hunter's decision to go professional was a carefully considered one. While acknowledging the importance of education, she recognized the unique opportunity presented by the new league. 'Obviously school is a really big opportunity and life experience that everyone should get to go through. But in my eyes, the way I viewed this new league, I think it's a very good opportunity for younger players to realize that you can play professionally in your country — at a young age. 'I took this opportunity when I got the chance and now I'm just excited to get started and kind of make a name for myself in it.' Hunter remains committed to her education, aiming to complete high school as soon as possible. Despite the demands of professional soccer, she strives for a balance between her athletic pursuits and academic goals. Hunter's dedication to her craft is evident in her unwavering work ethic and burning desire to improve. Inspired by Canadian captain Jessie Fleming, she aspires to emulate her success and make a lasting impact on the Canadian soccer scene
