TEDxLakeheadU 2025, themed 'Connecting for Change,' returned to Thunder Bay on Saturday, after a six-year hiatus. Held at The Outpost, the event brought together over 100 guests, including speakers, sponsors, partners, and community members. Faraz Khorsandi, event lead and president of Lakehead University Student Union, emphasized the importance of fostering connections and driving positive change within the community.
Khorsandi highlighted the significance of TEDx's return to Thunder Bay, stating that the event provides a platform for sharing innovative ideas and promoting collaboration. With 11 speakers from various backgrounds, including local, US, Calgary, and Toronto-based individuals, the event explored diverse perspectives on the theme of 'Connecting for Change.' The theme was inspired by Khorsandi's experiences as an international student, observing disconnections among key stakeholders in the city and recognizing the need for greater unity and openness to change.Dr. Kris Alexander, associate professor of video game design and educational technology at Toronto Metropolitan University, shared his insights on how artificial intelligence can revolutionize education. He emphasized the importance of embracing AI's potential and provided practical examples of its applications in various educational settings. Albert Brulé, CEO of United Way Thunder Bay, delivered a presentation titled 'United for Good: Better is Possible,' emphasizing the power of community collaboration in addressing social issues such as poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity. He stressed the need for collective action and a shared commitment to creating a better future for Thunder Bay. Ben Wise and Darren Chiu, co-founders of Captivate, presented on the 'Ecology of Influence,' exploring how emotional connections can be more effective than purely logical arguments in driving change. They emphasized the importance of understanding human psychology and leveraging emotional appeals to inspire action
