ByUkrainians are racing against the clock to save children in occupied areas from the effects of Russian propaganda ahead of the new school year, amid claims the Kremlin is shipping in teachers to raise a generation of children loyal to Russia.
“They’re destroying books, they’re destroying libraries, they’re burning our textbooks,” says Olena Sotnyk, an adviser to the Ukrainian deputy prime minister and a former member of parliament told. “They’re trying to destroy all traces of Ukrainian identity in these territories as soon as possible.” She said the start of the new school year on 1 September will provide Russia with a potential propaganda coup for its domestic audience – Ukrainian children attending Russian schools taught by Russian teachers.
“The first of September will be symbolic because it’s an opportunity for them to create an image,” she said. “There will be Russian agents talking on camera, telling the Russian people how successful they are in the war.Russia and Ukraine have both recently outlined their plans for the future of areas such as Mariupol, Kherson and Melitopol. Russia intends to annex and absorb them into the Russian state, while Ukraine isBut time isn’t on Ukraine’s side.
“They grew up in this propaganda-filled environment and it basically turned them against the people of Ukraine. This is not something that can be easily undone. The longer we leave our children under the exposure of Russian propaganda, the more difficult it will be to bring them back.”
