Teacher left children ages 9 and 11 at home during two-day trip, police say

There is no Connecticut law specifying a minimum age at which a child can be left without adult supervision.

WATERTOWN, Connecticut — A Connecticut school teacher has been suspended from her job after being arrested for allegedly leaving two children home alone while she traveled out of state.The children, ages 9 and 11, were unsupervised at her home for two days and two nights, the police said. They did not specify where the woman had gone or what her relationship is to the children, except that she is “responsible” for them.

She was charged with two counts each of risk of injury to a minor and second-degree reckless endangerment — both felonies. Her first court date is Jan. 25. School officials confirmed the woman is a teacher for a public school in nearby Waterbury and that she has been placed on leave while the district conducts an investigation. The school district’s website indicates she is an eighth-grade social studies teacher.“Waterbury Public Schools has been informed of a pending allegation regarding a Waterbury Public School staff member.
