Quinn Craig was the catalyst to unionize the first Starbucks store in San Antonio, the one at Vance Jackson Road and Loop 410. My fascination with this story comes from the tension between Schultz, who I take at face value, and union organizers, who I also take at face value, seemingly expressing the same goals. And the two sides are locked into increasingly opposed camps, a situation that will only be resolved through contentious litigation and endless hearings mediated by the National Labor Relations Board.
Shultz described Starbucks’ problem that way in 2008. He returned as CEO the second time, in fact, as a result of complaining in 2007 about the choices the company had made to grow to the detriment of quality. In a leaked memo describing the breakneck growth from 1,000 stores to 13,000, he said: “We have had to make a series of decisions that, in retrospect, have led to the watering down of the Starbucks Experience, and what some might call the commoditization of our brand.
“We believe we can do more for our partners working side by side than across a negotiating table,” Wall said. “Side by side, we can hear directly from our partners and determine what is needed — and where. Across the negotiating table, we’ll hear from mediated third parties — many who are just now coming to know who we are and how we operate.”
