Beloved Toronto festival faces funding challenges and organizational hurdles.
For the second consecutive year, the beloved Taste of the Danforth festival will not be transforming Toronto 's Greektown neighbourhood into a vibrant celebration of Greek culture and cuisine. The traditional festivities, usually held during the second weekend of August, have been quietly cancelled for 2023. Jim Tsafatinos, owner of Kalyvia Restaurant, expressed his disappointment, noting that despite other festivals resuming, Greektown missed out.
Last year's cancellation was attributed to funding constraints, with the GreekTown on the Danforth BIA stating that a new title sponsor was necessary to cover the event's costs.Councillor Paula Fletcher, representing the area, confirmed the neighbourhood group's inability to stage the festival this year, emphasizing that the massive event, attracting around a million people, relied on a specific organizer who was unavailable. Fletcher expressed the shared sentiment that the Taste of the Danforth, being the only major festival yet to fully recover from the pandemic's impact, is dearly missed by the community. While acknowledging the challenges, she encouraged the BIA to explore ways to bring the festival back and pledged the city's support in facilitating its revival.Speaking to CTV News Toronto, the Greektown BIA chair confirmed ongoing efforts to resurrect the festival in 2024, although the event might undergo some modifications. Planning is underway, and talks with the city are in progress. Councillor Fletcher urged the BIA to formulate a plan for 2024 and explore potential solutions. Tom Papadatos, an employee at Christina's, voiced his surprise at the cancellation, citing a lack of communication, and emphasized the significance of the Taste of the Danforth as a cornerstone of the neighbourhood's identity. He urged the BIA to find a way to bring back the event, highlighting its positive impact on the community and the local economy
