The company is producing the 2022 revised version of the 1934 musical, which features more dance numbers than the 1962 revival edition of the show
Antics aboard ship were popular long before “The Love Boat” began making excursions in the mid-1970s. Almost 90 years ago, the ocean liner SS American first carried passengers across the Atlantic with zany complications in the stage musical “Anything Goes.”
In “Anything Goes” stowaway Billy Crocker, a Wall Street broker, romantically pursues heiress Hope Harcourt, who happens to be engaged to, and is traveling with, fiancé Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Aiding and abetting is Billy’s friend, brassy nightclub singer Reno Sweeney, a role made famous by Ethel Merman and performed more recently to Tony Award-winning acclaim by Sutton Foster. For Schein as director, “Anything Goes” is more than just a shipboard romp.
“It’s much more subversive than we think it is, especially for the ‘30s” said Schein, who’s directing at SDMT for the first time. “Cole Porter was winking when he wrote some of the lyrics. There are a lot of double entendres.” Along with the songs is plenty of tap dancing on the deck of the SS American. Schein said he’s enjoyed working with Bush, the choreographer.
