Toronto put itself in a Game 1 hole Tuesday night and digging out is easier said than done.
“The game is about habits and percentages and when you start putting them in your favour, those teams will make the playoffs. Flipping the switch is the cliché, but what this team has always done is put itself in a position to make the playoffs and if there is a hiccup, you’re still getting in.
In putting together their own playoff model, the Leafs did not expect to get through the first round, versus Tampa Bay or any team, without adversity. This is why they added Cup winners Ryan O’Reilly and Luke Schenn, prominent in a changing of the guard that includes Jake McCabe, Noel Acciari, Sam Lafferty, Calle Jarnkrok and two new goalies.
O’Reilly said the Leafs were caught early “with a little hesitation in our game, thinking a little too much,” which Tampa instinctively exploited.
