NEW YORK—The Taliban are seeking to participate in the United Nations annual gathering as part of the Afghan militant group’s effort to win international recognition, after its military victory toppled Afghanistan’s U.S.-backed government.
The office of U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres received a letter from Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi on Monday asking to participate in the U.N. General Assembly, according to the U.N. spokesman Stéphane Dujarric. Meanwhile, the group said it had nominated Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban spokesman in its Qatar office, as its U.N. ambassador, Mr. Dujarric said.
