Dr. Mark Asbridge: “People need to understand that cancer is a risk associated with drinking. It's not really been that well acknowledged by the public.'
Beverage alcohol sales in Nova Scotia increased 1.7 per cent to $718.7 million between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022. - Saltwire fileThe latest research indicates we should imbibe a lot less booze for the sake of our health.“I think the new guidelines are a welcome addition to the body of evidence on the risks and harms associated with alcohol,” Dr. Mark Asbridge said in an interview Thursday.
Asbridge, interim head of Dalhousie University’s department of community health and epidemiology, said the guidelines are particularly valuable in regard to the cancer risks related to drinking. “People need to understand that cancer is a risk associated with drinking. It's not really been that well acknowledged by the public,” Asbridge said.
As for what appears to be a 180-degree turn on alcohol risk, “I completely understand it’s quite a change and many of us when we were doing the evidence saw this as challenging to understand and accept, from the public point, from what we saw previously,” Asbridge said. “More than 50 per cent of your people presenting to emerg have an alcohol-related presentation - from interpersonal violence or drinking too much, alcohol poisoning associated with a traffic crash or collision. It’s always been present.”A provincial government spokesperson said Nova Scotians need to know the health risks associated with drinking alcohol “and the new evidence confirms that when it comes to drinking alcohol, less is better.
