Lobbyists acting on behalf of Chang Chun Petrochemical Co. have recently engaged both the federal and provincial governments on possible financing for the prospective plant, according to filings with each government this month.
A Taiwan-based industrial company is eyeing Ontario for the development of a copper foil manufacturing plant, as overseas battery materials producers continue to establish footholds in North America.
Chang Chun is based in Tapei and produces a broad range of products across the chemical, plastics and textile industries. Used to carry electrical current and discharge heat, copper foil is an integral part of lithium ion batteries. Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli would not comment on the talks with Chang Chun, but said the province is focused on bringing further battery investments, including those in copper foil production, to Ontario.
