The Indigenous community around Campbell River is feeling targeted after vandalism to symbolic wooden red dresses . Leslie Hnatiw, who placed 48 red wooden dresses along Highway 19 north of Courtenay to raise awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Children and 2SLGBTQI+ people, says the dresses have been stolen or damaged.

A local First Nation member expressed frustration over the destruction, saying it makes it hard to overcome major issues like residential school fallout when even simple acts of commemoration are targeted
