Health Minister Sylvia Jones is signalling the prescription for what ails Ontario’s overburdened health-care system is to be more “innovative.”

In a speech Wednesday to Association of Municipalities of Ontario delegates in Ottawa — using language that critics have warned means even more private-sector delivery of services — Jones said changes loom.

But the opposition New Democrats have said that any further privatization of health-care service delivery “will cost us all dearly.” Gélinas noted that “if private surgery clinics accept your OHIP card for your procedure, they bill you for your room, the painkillers you take, your meals, the physical therapy you need and more — people walk away from these facilities with bills for thousands of dollars.”“Our goals are clear: provide the best care possible to patients and residents while ensuring the resources and supports are in place to keep our province and economy open,” the minister said.

Last week, Ford pointed to specialized private facilities like the Shouldice Hernia Hospital in Markham as examples of how services could be delivered. “While Shouldice was grandfathered in, its private model was banned because of the cost to people and to the system,” she said.
