Sydney Academy was closed on Monday due to a physical plant problem that caused issues within the school. Cleanup and repair crews were at the school on Monday. Plumbers and heating professionals were busy all weekend cleanup after busted water pipes and heating related issues. GREG MCNEIL/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — The Sydney Academy school year will continue online for now as contractors continue to clean up and repair damage caused by frozen pipes over the weekend.

A letter to families issued Tuesday night from the school notes that it ‘remains unclear when the building will be open for students to return.’Students and teachers will now meet through Google Classroom/Meets beginning Thursday and student schedules will remain the same, according to the letter. Students who do not have Chromebooks at home will be able to pick one up at the Teen Health Entrance at Sydney Academy on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“We all hope this is a temporary reality, but because we are still in the early stages of clean-up, I am unable to provide you with a more detailed timeline,” reads the letter signed by the Sydney Academy Administration Team, listed as Kathi McConnell-Hore, Heather Urquhart and Greg Callaghan.
