Reforms needed to prepare for next pandemic, top infectious-disease expert tells The New York Times

Modernizations are needed in the U.S. public health system to prepare for the next pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci has warned.

In a series of interviews with The New York Times conducted this month and published on Monday, the recently retired top infectious disease expert pointed to weaknesses in public-health data collection, noting that information on COVID-19’s progression was lacking during the pandemic. The remarks from Fauci, who retired at the end of last year as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, come about two weeks before the COVID-19 public health emergency is set to officially end on May 11. More than 1.1 million people in the U.S. have died of COVID, and less than 17% of the population is vaccinated with the updated booster, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
